About This Item

Athens, GA: The University of Georgia Press, 1991. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo. Full black cloth. ix, 133 pp. Slight sunning to tail edge of front board, else fine in fine jacket. Offering fresh readings of three early romances by Giovanni Boccaccio, The Shades of Aeneas is the first study to treat the medieval Italian writer as a serious interpreter of history and as a subtle reader of Vergil. The book argues that in these three of Boccaccio's works--all written in the 1330s, several years before his masterpiece The Decameron--Boccaccio engages decisive moments of pagan antiquity and at the same time takes issue with important themes of classical writing.
