About This Item
London: Printed for T. Vernor,, [1787]. First edition, with the undated title page and the preface dated London 1787. Costigan, described on the title page as "late captain of the Irish Brigade, in the service of Spain", was the pseudonym of Colonel Diogo Ferrier, who came from Porto and served as first commander and organizer of the Algarve Artillery Regiment, raised in 1774, but was dismissed. The letters are dated between 1778 and 1779. ESTC's notes on the various editions of the book are in error. Two volumes, octavo (210 x 125 mm). Contemporary pale sprinkled calf, red morocco labels, gilt rules either side of raised bands. Ownership inscriptions of William Greenly, 1788, at head of titles; engraved bookplates of E. H. Greenly. A couple of minor scuffs to spines, headcaps rubbed, else a fine copy. Duarte de Sousa I 346; ESTC T148536; Rose Macaulay, They Went to Portugal, 1985, pp. 399-40.
