About This Item

London and Manchester: Henry Sotheran & Co. ,. Good with no dust jacket. 1881. Second Edition (Illustrated). Hardcover. In the original black quarter leather with gilt titling and green marbled paper covered boards, corners and edges very bumped and worn with loss of the paper showing through to the boards at the very edges. The leather spine is chipped and rubbed at the top edge, is splitting a little at the edges of the spine but secure and not too noticable, and has lost about an inch at the foot of the spine - but not affecting the Title which is all still present. Internally VERY Good, All hinges secure. NO Inscriptions or Marks. Green marbled endpapers - which match the covers. Half title, including (x) + 193 pp, + [1]. Frontispiece (Swansea from the Sea, with the Cooper Works to the North) plus 14 other plates/illustrations as listed, and a couple of others not called for in the illustration list, but obviously as published. Printed by Pritchett & Taylor. Col. Grant-Francis was the justice of the peace for the County of Glamorgan and Borough of Swansea; Vice President of the Royal Institution of South Wales. Originally issued in a very limited edition of just 50 copies, this is the much enlarged (and better) Illustrated Second Edition. Grant-Francis was a business man and antiquary whose antiquarian publications arose out of his local interests, and, being issued in small limited editions, many of his books are now extremely scarce. This copy also includes an interesting/associated news-cutting dated Nov. 2nd 1936 entitled " When they Bartered for Copper on Wharfs. Memories of Swansea in the 'Sixties" . See Images. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
