About This Item
Leipzig: Felix Meiner, 1925. First Edition . Soft cover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. First edition off-print of Sigmund Freud's autobiography, inscribed on the top cover, "Seimen lieben / O. Pfister / Freud / 12.2.25." The book is further inscribed by Pfister on the blank recto of the frontispiece, " Seimen lieben Freunde / Prof. R. Brandt / In herzlicher Gesinnung / Zurich 24.4.55." Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis. Oskar Pfister (1873-1956) was a Swiss Lutheran minister and lay psychoanalyst born in Zurich, Switzerland. He is perhaps best known for applying psychoanalysis to the science of education, as well as a belief system combining psychoanalytic psychology and theology. In Zurich, he was in close intellectual proximity to Eugen Bleuler and Carl Jung. The friendship between Freud and Pfister is well documented, lasting over 30 years and only ending upon Freud's death. Less is known about Professor Brandt, though he is believed to have completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa, Canada and to have written several articles pertaining to Sigmund Freud as well as the psychoanalytic concept of transference. (We are interested to learn more of Dr. Brandt should anyone have additional information). This offprint is bound in teal paper wrap covers. There are a few penciled marks in the margins, as well as some notations believed to be in German in the blank spaces of the last page. There are some handling creases scattered throughout. Overall, this offprint remains tight, and it is otherwise clean and intact. The offprint is housed in a custom felt-lined clamshell case with leather spine and spine labels, raised spine bands, and gilt lettering. The offprint cover is nicely copied onto a green cloth affixed to the top of the case. This cloth piece shows light rubbing, not affecting any letter. Case is otherwise Fine.
