About This Item

(Zurich/Prague: Buchergilde Gutenberg, 1936). First edition in German, preceded by a Czech edition in 1934. First issue with 5 lines of text below number on colophon page [Treverton 868]. A revised and expanded version of an Indian creation myth originally appearing in DER KARREN [The Carreta]; first separate edition thus. This copy number 2,860 of an unknown quantity. (According to the colophon, Traven wrote the book at the special request of the board of the Buchergilde Gutenberg as a premium for its members with the stipulation it only be distributed from Sept. 1, 1936 to June 30, 1937, which would explain it's lack of limitation.) Not published in the U.S. until 1968 -- his last English work. Linen boards stamped in dark orange on front and spine; top edge orange. Scattered foxing, primarily to first and last several leaves, otherwise would be near fine. Lacking the dust jacket, if issued in one.
