About This Item

First Edition. 8vo. Green spider-web patterned boards, cloth back, titles to spine and front cover gilt.

Forman Brown was one of the world's leaders in puppet theatre in his day, as well as an important early gay novelist. He was a member of the Yale Puppeteers and the driving force behind the famous Turnabout Puppet Theater in Los Angeles. This is his first book, a poetry collection.

#####

Frontispiece and 3 full-page woodcuts by Packard, all with spider-web patterned glassine guards. This issue with the illustrated jacket precedes the more common edition issued in wrappers, also with a jacket. This is the first book by the noted gay author who also wrote the 1933 novel Better Angel, about a young man coming to terms with his homosexuality. The novel is regarded as the first American novel to present the 'gay' experience in a healthy light.[Under the pseudonym Richard Meeker.] When it was reprinted in 1995, under the assumption that the author was no more alive, Brown stepped forward and acknowledged the novel was heavily autobiographic.

#####

Inscribed on front flyleaf to Charleson Gray, another writer, most known for writing the Photoplay novelization of "The Vagabond Lover," Rudy Vallee's first film about a small-town boy who finds fame and romance when he joins a dance band. (1929)

#####

CONDITION: Near fine, corners and edges lightly rubbed. Front pastedown chafed, probably from removal of a bookplate. In good+ dustjacket chipped at corners and spine ends; not price-clipped.

About Armadillo & Dicker Books & Ephemera

80 Years of Selling Things People Could Easily Live Without -- but now Online only.*****CONDITION: We are conservative graders. If we say FINE you can count on it. If there are any minor defects [e.g. minor shelf-wear] they will be noted. VERY GOOD means there is light shelf or surface-wear, possibly some light age-toning, maybe a prior owner's inked name inside -- but no significant defects. GOOD means we wish we had a better copy too, but still in collectable condition. Any significant defects will be noted. FAIR usually means the interior is good or better but the covers are heavily worn. POOR means both the interior and the covers are damaged. Again, significant defects will be noted.
