Black and white photographs, black and white photographic frontispiece. Boards are age toned, edgeworn and rubbed, spine is shaken, slanted and cocked, edges age toned. Front hinge is cracked to expose mull. Pastedowns and endpapers show foxing. Two owner's names in pencil and ink to ffep; good.

Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Overall a good condition item. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Some light marking and tanning.

Slight cracking to hinges, with exposed netting, pages slightly loose. Pages and illustrations are lightly tanned throughout. Thumb-marking present front free endpaper. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Slight crushing to spine ends. Water stain to rear board. Unclipped jacket has heavy edgewear with areas of loss, heavy tears, chips, and creasing. Light tanning to spine and edges. Water staining to rear panel and spine. Staining to front panel. Wear marks overall.

There is bumping to corners and crushing to spine ends. Tanning to spine and edges. Gilt lettering is darkened slightly. Book has a slight forward lean.

A beautiful book with well over 100 color illustrations and even more in b&w. The book includes a series of essays on the historic, economic, and cultural environment of Edo period Japan and the collections focus on early Kabuki actor prints, including many by the artists Toyokuni and Kuniyoshi).
