No jackets as issued. This compilation, published incrementally as the war progressed, ultimately consisted of 20 volumes. Dark blue blind-stamped cloth over boards with gilt-stamped lettering on spine and gilt-stamped decoration on spine and front board. Illustrated endpapers. Top edge gilt. All volumes contain colorized photo frontispiece with annotated tissue guard, b&w and color plates, illustrations, and fold-out maps. Index at end of some volumes. Prefaced in Vol. I by "What The War Means to America" by Major General Leonard Wood; U.S.A.; "Naval Lessons of the War" by Rear Admiral Austin M. Knight, U.S.N.; "The World's War" by Frederick Palmer; "Theatres of the War's Campaign" by F.H. Simonds and "The War Correspondent" by Arthur Ruhl. Clipping from 1958 Indianapolis Star laid in between pages 388 and 389. All volumes VG+ to F. All tips sharp. Gilt stamping brilliant and sharp. Binding solid and tight. Text blocks square. Pages clean and unmarked throughout. Cases show the following blemishes… Vol I: Scattered spots of light discoloration on back board. Tiny puncture at lower leading corner front board; Vol II: Tiny puncture at upper left corner front board. ¼" diameter faded spot at upper leading corner back board; Vol III: Scrape with puncture at lower leading corner front board; Vol IV: Small puncture at lower leading corner front board. Half-inch diameter light stain to back board; Vol VI: Cloth rubbed through to board at lower leading edge front board. Set presents stunning uniformity of design and condition.
