FIRST EDITION 1803. 4to, approximately 290 x 225 mm, 11½ x 9 inches, 12 HAND COLOURED AQUATINT PLATES OF VIEWS, the first being of Torr Abbey in Devon, the second of Southampton, the rest of northwestern France: Le Havre, Caen, Rouen, Cherbourg, A Woman of Caux, Le Bois de Boulogne and one of the ruins in Le Petit Trianon. Sketches drawn by the author and engraved and printed by T. Medland. Pages: viii, 1-262, bound in modern full calf, ornate gilt border to covers, gilt raised bands, richly gilt in compartments, gilt lettered red morocco label, new endpapers, edges untrimmed as published, housed in a cloth slip case. Title page lightly foxed, neat early name in ink to top margin, small neat old repairs to margin edges on first 5 leaves, and 18 further leaves scattered through the book, not near text, very small closed edge tear to 1 plate margin, repaired on blank side, not affecting image, 120 mm (4½ inch) closed tear to 1 text page, repaired with archival clear document tape, no loss, a couple of leaves lightly browned, 2 plates show slight offsetting from facing text, pale foxing and age-browning to many margins. A good copy, with the plates hand coloured and in an attractive leather binding. Sir John Carr (1872-1832) wrote 6 travel books all set in Europe, which were popular in their day.
