About This Item

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1947. Cloth. Very Good. FIRST UK EDITION. 8vo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Pushing to spine ends, a few minor marks. In Craigie's perfect illustrated dust jacket: chips to spine ends, edgwear and creasing. Very good/ good+ A nice copy. As Dorothy Craigie's dust jacket neatly encapsulates, Caspary's novel is set in a pulp crime publishers, with Noble Barclay inspired by Bernarr Macfadden, the American magazine publisher and advocate of physical culture. Caspary had worked briefly on one of Macfadden's magazines in the 1920s, getting to know his daughter, Eleanor (the namesake of Barclay's daughter).
