Brown, Carlyle (American, 1919-1963). TABLE STILL LIFE WITH GLASSES. Ink and wash on paper, 1952. Signed and dated '52, lower right. 9 1/2 x 13 inches, framed to 14 x 17 1/2 inches. Provenance: Catherine Viviani Gallery, New York, with its label, on the verso of the frame. In excellent condition.Originally from Califonia, Brown went to New York in 1946, after completing his art studies and his service in the US Navy. He became part of the circle of artists, musicians and writers around Pavel Tchelitchev, and had a one-man show at Durlacher Galleries in 1947. His work was collected by Cecil Beaton, Charles James, Van Day Truex, and Clifford Coffin. He married Margery Hulett. The couple were invited to live in England by Edward James, the leading collector of work by Dali. They traveled in Europe and settled in Rome in 1949. In Italy Brown began to focus on Still-life subjects. Brown died of an overdose of pills and alcohol in 1961.
