About This Item
Iqaluit: North Winds Arctic Adventures, 1999. FIRST CANADIAN EDITION, with AUTHORIAL INSCRIPTION. 8vo, with colour plates. Original navy buckram, spine lettered in silver, upper board lettered in magenta. Signed by McNair in gold pen on title page, with a generous inscription above: "Dear Peter, Thanks for sharing the Mt. Barbeau Expedition with me! I hope that I am as strong as you when I reach your age". Folded flyer for the book laid in. A lovely, square copy. In the original illustrated dust jacket: spine sunned. A lovely copy of McNair's account of the expedition, leading twenty "ordinary British women," to the north pole. Fine/ near fine Perhaps inscribed to Pete Ford, a member of a Canadian-American expedition that ascended Barbeau Peak via the north ridge in 1998 (a year before McNair published this book)? Or, more likely, given the inscription, a Peter from an earlier expedition (1982)? Barbeau Peak, the highest point in the Canadian Arctic, is located on Ellesmere Island within Quttinirpaaq National Park. McNair went on to ascend Barbeau in 2002.
