Saint Louis: Missouri Historical Society, 1916. Limited Edition #164 of 365 copies. First Edition Thus; reprint of the very rare 1846 original edition printed in Waterloo, Illinois. 8vo. 316pp, [i]p of publisher's advertisements. Black & white tissue-guarded illustrative plates; map. Frontispiece and facsimile of 1846 title page included. Quarter dark blue cloth under blue paper covered boards; gilt titles to the spine; top edge gilt; fore and bottom edge deckled. Bookseller label for Arthur H. Clarke in Glendale, CA affixed inside lower front board. Minor wear to corners and spine ends; else a near fine copy. "One of the earliest narratives of the fur-trade covering experiences on the upper Missouri in 1809, and an expedition to Santa Fe, in 1821. Written from James' dictation by Nathan Niles, who, representing local newspaper criticism, destroyed nearly all copies." (Howes J49; Graff 2193; Wagner Camp 121).
