New York: Heritage Press, 1961. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Tranquillo Marangoni. A sturdy, attractive, tightly bound hardcover copy of a Heritage Press title, being a First Edition Thus. Clean, bright, unmarked interior, minimal rubbing to extremities, though with a sunned spine (to light green) having been preserved well in a Fair condition, paper-covered cardboard slipcase that has been neatly tape-repaired along two edges. Bound handsomely in green cloth over boards, black lettering and illustration to front cover, lettering to spine. From a collection of three dozen Heritage Press titles that belonged to an Eastern Washington professional botanist. Complete with the Sandglass newsletter. The Heritage Press operated from 1937 - 1982 and was created by George Macy, who managed with editors the reprinting of volumes from the Limited Editions Club, thus enabling fine printing exemplars to trickle down to a broader public still thirsty, newly thirsty, for classic nineteenth-century novels and biographies. Victor Hugo's novel was translated from the original French by Isabel F. Hapgood, and with an Introduction by Matthew Josephson, and with beautiful woodcut engravings by Tranquillo Marangoni. xix [5], 5-578 [1] pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
