About This Item

Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1914. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. An uncommon volume, with no other copies available as of this writing. It's Pinchot's guide to the forestry profession, starting with the chapter "What is a Forest?" Here is schooling from the ground up from the master, the first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service. He writes in his preface, "It is to help in the decision of those who are considering forestry as a profession that this little book has been written." He almost dares the reader to believe he (or she) doesn't have what it takes: "Unless he has a compelling love for the Forester's life and the Forester's work, let him keep out of it." Amen (the same could be said of the bookselling).

A handsome small octavo in green cloth with white stamped lettering, with black and white photos scattered through out. Very good with rubbing to corners and a black dot as if a remainder mark to bottom text block face. Very slight lean to spine. No jacket.

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
