Lausanne & Geneva:: Chez Marc-Michel Bousquet, 1744., 1744. 8vo. [2], 308 pp. Title printed in red and black, woodcut title vignette, woodcut headpiece, initial letter, 1 folding table (p. 166), 2 double-page folding tables of lunar observations (between pp. 266(a), 267(b)), 6 folding engraved plates, errata; small repair on verso of title, 2 leaves with waterstaining. Tiny manuscript note on title, recording the author's death date, larger ink ms. also on foot of title: "1744". Original full mottled calf, leather gilt-stamped spine label, raised bands; joints cracked. Very good. Extremely rare. First edition. Cheseaux was a Swiss astronomer who was the first to observe a number of nebulae. Loys de Cheseaux "earned his European reputation as an astronomer thanks to his Traite de la Comete (1744, in which he defends Newton's physics and discusses Olbers' Paradox." – Historical Dictionary of Switzerland. / Halley, having banked his reputation on the predicted return of his comet's return in 1758 spurred similar efforts at understanding the computation and understanding of a comet's orbit by Cheseaux and Leonhard Euler. It was Cheseaux who put together the hypothesis that the 76- and 75-yar periods between returns of the comets seen in 1531, 1607, and 1682, were probably, "two comets, each traveling on identical orbits such that when one comet was at perihelion, the other was close to its aphelion. Their orbital periods were constant and identical. Calculating the interval between the perihelion passages in 1531 and 1682 to be 151 years and 10 days, he predicted that the comet last seen in 1607 could be expected to reach perihelion on November 7, 1758, by the Gregorian calendar. This prediction was given in his 1744 work on the comet of that year. Though not discovered by Cheseaux, this comet is often referred to as Cheseaux's because he computed its orbit and ephemeris and described its impressive, multiple tails." – Yeomans, p. 123. Yeomans, Donald K. Comets; a chronological history of observation, science, myth, and folklore, Wiley, (1991).

Description:
Paradise Lost was originally published in the year 1667. Early editions such as the one being offered here are very scarce and valuable. This fifteenth edition from 1738 is completely original inside and out. The leather covers show some scuffing, and the gold decor on both front and back covers is still good. There is a former owner's name on the front endsheet, and a few pages have some edge spots. The binding is tight, and the book is mostly as it was when it was published almost three centuries ago. This will make a fine and unique addition to your library of classic literature.

Description:
Lalande 425. *** In-8 de (2), 308 pp, 2 tableaux et 6… Read More

Six folding engraved plates. Title in red & black. 1 p.l., 308 pp. 8vo, cont. mottled sheep, flat spine nicely gilt, contrasting leather lettering piece on spine. Lausanne & Geneva: M.M. Bousquet, 1744. First edition of this important book in which Cheseaux (1718-51), grandson of Crouzas and a fellow the Royal Society of London, first stated what was to become known as "the paradox of Cheseaux": "With an infinite and uniform distribution of stars throughout space, the night sky should shine with a brightness corresponding to their average surface brightness." A number of notable astronomers have struggled with this problem, including Halley, Olbers, Struve, and Herschel. "The magnificent comet of 1744 was both bright and unusual in that it was reliably reported that it had multiple tails spread out like a fan. The Swiss astronomer Jean Philippe Loys de Cheseaux, after whom the comet is often named, began his observations on December 13, 1743, and computed a… Read More

The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.
Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
