About This Item

USA: Clarkson N. Potter, Inc., Publishers, 1985. First US Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7. Type: Hardback First American Printing. Hardcover Book and Dust Jacket in Very Good Condition. Edited by John Whitehead. Binding of black full cloth with bright and sharp silver titles on spine; immaculate condition. Square, sharp corners, tight binding. There is one signature that is loose from the binding at the lower edge of the leaves, attached on upper half--pages 44-58. Other than that the book is like new. Pages clean and white, no marks, no creases. Clean and unmarked jacket is not price-clipped, has light wear to extremities. Sixty-six occasional pieces are here collected from newspapers, magazines, book introductions, prefaces, and addresses (none published in book form) about familiar people- such as Dorothy Parker, Noel Coward, Marie Laurencin, Peter Arno-or people you may meet for the first time; about subjects such as writing, theatre, art, travel, growing old; about the fall of France, Anglo-American friendship, the meaning of freedom. Whatever the topic, the reader will experience Maugham's well-constructed language, his irony, his bursts of passion, his sometimes savage wit. Delightful reading. 275 pages. 6.25 x 9.5 inches. Clarkson N. Potter, Inc., Publishers, New York, 1985.
