About This Item
1912. A Smile of Fortune | The Secret Sharer | Freya of the Seven Isles. London: J. M. Dent & Sons, 1912. Original olive-green cloth.
First Edition. This collection of three tales is sought primarily for the middle one, "The Secret Sharer" -- Conrad's best-known short story excepting "Heart of Darkness." This copy's binding is in the third and usual state, with "Freya of the Seven Isles" printed correctly on the front cover (the grain of the cloth is also more muted). The rare first binding state reads "Freya of the Secret Isles"; the none-too-common second state has "Secret" buffed" out and "Seven" over-stamped.) This volume is in good-to-very good condition (endpapers cracked, minor edge-wear, rear paste-down scraped, spine slightly ridged in center). Supino A16.1.0, binding state C; Cagle A16a.1, binding c. Provenance: small ticket of Foyle's of Charing Cross Road; bookplate of The Edwards Library; discreet bookplate of the Conrad bibliographer David J. Supino.
