About This Item

Southend-on-Sea, Essex, 2/3/ 1955.. T.l.s., one page, closely typed, octavo. Typescript, ca. 50 leaves, quarto, with occasional manuscript insertions and annotations. Plus another item. Some use and creasing to portions of the typescript, paperclip rustmark at top edges of letter and a few leaves of the typescript; good. The poet writes "Dear Miss [Erica] Marx," in her role as editor/publisher of the Hand & Flower Press, commenting: "I wonder if you have forgotten me? I believe it is more than three years since last I wrote you, in the days of the B.P.A.'s flourishing. It was a great pity that the Association disbanded. But such an organisation needs more than a few enthusiasts to make it a success; and self interest is always a 'killer'." Cabuche was editor of IMPACT, the magazine of the Dulwich Branch of the British Poetry Association. He updates Marx on his activities, and mentions the appearance of some of his poems in anthologies, noting "I feel it is about time I did something about getting my work under a single cover ...." Several of the individual typescripts are signed by the poet. Accompanied by Marx's retained carbon of her response, explaining that in spite of the success of her POEMS IN PAMPHLET series (1951-53), she has "experienced considerable disappointment in the attempts I have made to encourage people to take an interest in poetry ... at the most optimistic I can manage three books per year now, and I already have my list full as far as I can see for the next 18 months ...." It would appear that Cabuche's efforts to achieve book-length publication were without success.
