Niagara Falls, Ontario, 1859. First Edition. Cloth. Good +. 178 p. 25 cm. Red cloth hardcover with blank impressing. Some soiling to covers. Pencil doodling and pencil and ink inscriptions on front endpapers. Ink signature on title page. Some dampstains to leaf before title.
Kirby was considered the "spokesman, interpreter, and bulwark of the Tory and Loyalist ideal." In this poem he emulates Scott's "Marmion" in a nostalgic expression of an idealized Canadian future, one in which Upper Canada forever establishes its historic relation to the awesome might of Great Britain. Title page bears the signature of former owner John William Loux, M.P.P. (1818-1886), who represented the riding of Russell from 1858 to 1861 and was therefore a member of Canada West's legislative assembly at the time this book was published. TPL 8731.
