About This Item

Leipzig: E. W. Fritzsch, 1873. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. OVERBECK, Franz. Ueber die Christlichkeit unserer heutigen Theologie (How Christian is our Present Day Theology) — E. W. Fritzsch, Leipzig, 1873. 1 blank leaf + Half-title + TP + [v] – vii = vorwort + [1] – 99 + [101] – 102 = Anmerkungen + [103] = Inhaltsubersicht. Octavo. First Edition. Franz Overbeck held the position of professor of Theology at the University of Basel from 1870 – 1875, during the same time Friedrich Nietzsche was professor of Classical Philology. Overbeck and Nietzsche became fast friends. Overbeck’s Über die Christlichkeit unserer heutigen Theologie served as a companion piece, of sorts, to Nietzsche’s first Untimely Meditation, Unzeitgemasse Betrachtungen: David Strauss der Bekenner und der Schriftsteller—both published the same year, 1873, both attacks on the theology of the time, and both found a common target in the recently published book by David Strauss, Vom alten und neuen Glauben (The Old and New Faith , 1872). One can imagine numerous discussions about Strauss, theology, philology, and philosophy taking place in the home Overbeck and Nietzsche shared in Basel. In Overbeck’s book, Über die Christlichkeit unserer heutigen Theologie, his most important work, he asserts the impossibility of a scientific or historical Christian theology. Christianity itself eludes any efforts at systematization. A truly scarce book. CONDITION: Very good or better in contemporary marbled boards (ca. 1900) with cloth backstrip. Paper label with handwritten “OVERBECK” printed in contemporary ink. Half-title with repair to bottom corner. Light foxing. Otherwise a clean, bright copy of a truly rare title.
