London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1897. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Decorated red cloth gilt. Contemporary owner name (R. Chandos Pole) inked with blind embossed stamp on preliminary pages, light foxing on page edges, hinges cracked, spine sunned with fraying on ends, about very good with edges bumped. "This novel has been re-written and lengthened by one third since its appearance in serial form, A. Conan Doyle. Hindhead: April 23, 1897." The Chando-Pole family has been at the seat of the Radbourne Hall from the time of the Norman Conquest. Radbourne Hall is a prominent historical fixture in Derbyshire. Reginald Chandos Pole posed for portraits by different artists, "Master of the Meynell Hounds" by H. Hill and "Men of the Day No. 397" by Sir Leslie Ward
