About This Item
New York: Gemor Press. 1944. Second edition, in year of first publication, limited to 800 copies. Narrow octavo, original pictorial boards,, b&w illus (line engravings on copper), pp 86. Edges and joints rubbed with some loss. Previous owner's inscription front free endpaper. Very good condition. Short stories. 'Under a Glass Bell' was the first book by Anaïs Nin to gain attention from the literary establishment. It was published by Nin's own printing press, which she set up after fleeing France before the German invasion. Unable to find a publisher for her works she turned to self-publishing; she bought a treadle-operated press and learned how to operate it and set type. The book is illustated by her husband, the artist Ian Hugo: the cover and engravings are printed in relief directly from the original plates. "These stories represent the moment when many like myself had found only one answer to the suffering of the world: to dream, to tell fairytales, to elaborate and to follow the labyrinth of fantasy" (Anais Nin, from the Foreword). 2nd Edition. Boards.
