The author and her husband first visited the Arctic in 1938. The journals she kept over the next three years form the basis for this book. The Washburns traveled the coastal areas of Victoria and King William Islands by boat and dog team, and flew over them in single engine planes. Their companions included native Inuit, Hudson's Bay Company employees, Canadian government workers, and Catholic and Anglican missionaries.
