Excerpt from Intro: Few nations present a more testing challenge to an American anxious to make an objective approach to the study of a foreign country and to achieve a realistic understanding of the problems of our relations with that country than does Israel. Much in such a study will inevitable move him to profound and sometimes blinding sympathies. We still feel horror at the cruelties the Jews have suffered in our own times, and if we are conscientious must feel our own share of the guilt for historic anti-Semitism; we are by tradition committed sympathy for the underdog, especially when he fights against great odds, as have the Israelis nor are such sympathies diminished by admiration for the success with which the vastly outnumbered Israelis have hitherto faced their Arab enemies; we admire the Israelis as representatives of modernity in the midst of a Near East still barely emerrging from an older culture and primitive economy. All this and much more can make many Americans into unreasoning—and perhaps more important, unobserving—partisans of Israel. Foreign Policy
