About This Item
London, Cecil Palmer, [1930]. 8vo. Original publisher's cloth; pp. 173; cloth a little rubbed, front fly-leaf renewed, light spotting internally; from the George Goldsmith Memorial Library in Golders Green with their bookplate on front fly-leaf and library rules pasted inside front cover. This is the very rare first edition of this First World War diary kept by a progressive and feminist witer, who had been married to the tennis player and health guru Eustace Miles. 'I kept these personal War Records; otherwise they might never have been known, and certainly have been forgotten … And, if reading of these records of the agony of London during those terrible War days adds to the determination that the Great War shall be the Last War, then these records will not have been written in vain' (p. 11). Hallie Miles' string of atmospheric observations evoke the city and its people in an altered state, full of fear - and hope for a better world.
