About This Item

New York: Osprey Publishing, 2007. 4th Printing. Soft Cover. Near Fine. 7x0x9. Palmer, Ian; Gerrard, Howard. Fourth printing. Minor edge wear. 2007 Soft Cover. 80 pp. The Imperial Japanese Navy was a pioneer in naval aviation, having commissioned the world's first carrier, which was used against the US fleet at Pearl Harbor. The Americans followed suit, initiating huge aircraft carrier development programs. As the Pacific war escalated into the largest naval conflict in history, the role of the carrier became the linchpin of American and Japanese naval strategy as these rival vessels found themselves locked in a struggle for dominance of this critical theater of war. This book provides an analysis of the variety of weaponry available to the rival carriers, including the powerful shipborne guns and embarked aircraft. Study the design and development of these revolutionary ships, discover the pioneering tactics that were used to ensure victory and "live" the experiences of the rival airmen and gun crews as they battled for victory in a duel of skill, tenacity and guts.

Reviews

On Mar 2 2015, a reader said:
Mark Stille's book offers a concise comparison of the U.S. and Japanese carrier fleets in the first year of their clash in the Pacific. Much of his slender work offers a comparison of the two sides on factors ranging from the airplanes used to the effectiveness of their antiaircraft fire, with only the last few pages devoted to a summary of the carrier battles themselves. With a short but useful guide to further works at the end of the book, this is a useful introduction to the Second World War in the Pacific, one that might make a nice gift for the reader just beginning to learn about the subject.
