About This Item

Little, Brown and Company, 1897. HB. Fair. One of my mother's favorite authors, Mr. Sienkiewicz tells the touching story of a young Christian woman named Lygia and a young Roman man named Marcus. Set in the time of the Emperor Nero, details the debauchery that the Roman empire had sunk to towards the end of the Empire. It was first published in Polish and then into more than 50 other languages. This work played a part in the author's winning of the Nobel prize for literature in 1905.

Reviews

On May 18 2021, a reader said:
I received this book as a gift for my 18th birthday in 1955. The title, age and not liking to read, I filed it. When I did pick it up in n my 30's and read it it became one of my favorite reads.

About The Periscope Collection

The Periscope Collection is an online store physically located in Nashville, TN. The Collection has grown out of my love of all things book-related, and after 30+ years of home schooling. We specialize in old and rare children's books, especially authors such as Tasha Tudor, Robert Lawson, and Marguerite de Angeli. We also focus on early American history, with a particular interest in the Landmark Biographies, the "Book House" series and "The Book of Life." One of our greatest passions is children's historical fiction, from authors like Wilma Pitchford Hays and William O. Steele (a native Tennessean!) and Lois Lenski, from my home state of Connecticut. And for those of you who have a heart for homeschooling, we have collected many books that Charlotte Mason would have called "Living Books": books that reflect the personality of the writer and, unlike a textbook, are not full of what she referred to as "twaddle". Along with Living Books, we also have a selection of Homeschooling helps, from some of homeschooling's wisest veterans. Come browse our Collection and see what you can discover!
And for all my loyal customers: shipping fees have recently been cut in half!
