About This Item

Value Communications. Near Fine with no Dust Jacket. 1978. Stated 1st Edition. Hardcover. 0916392295 . An American political scientist, academic, and diplomat who received the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize for his late 1940s mediation in Palestine. He was the first African American and person of color to be so honored in the history of the prize. He was involved in the formation and administration of the United Nations. In 1963, he was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President John F. Kennedy. As a Harvard student (where he was the first Negro to receive a Ph. D in political science) in order to help with living expenses, Bunche worked part-time for a bookstore. One day the owner called him into the office and said, "Folks tell me you're a Negro. I don't give a damn, but are you?" Bunche asked, "What did you think?" and the owner said, "I couldn't see you clear enough." Bunche was multiracial, and showed his European and African ancestry. ValueTales is a series of simple biographical children's books published primarily by the now-defunct Value Communications, Inc. In La Jolla, California. The forty-three books were written by Dr. Spencer Johnson and Ann Donegan Johnson, and illustrated by Stephen Pileggi. Each book gave a simplified biography of a historical figure as an allegory, illustrating the value of a positive characteristic. Each volume was a white pictorial glossy hardback book around 60 pages long with a brightly colored cartoon of the biographee. One in a series of works which demonstrate the importance of various values. This series is now out-of-print and the publisher is no longer in business. Loved by teachers and parents alike still today. ; Value Tales Series; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 64 pages; 30378 .
