The top edge of the text block has some spotting. The dust jacket is mostly clean and bright, but has two small spots of discoloration to the bottom spine joints - other than the two spots, the dust jacket is clean and bright. "Charnas' work focuses on the sociological and the anthropological—rather than exclusively the technological—dimensions of science fiction. Her background in history and economics, as well as her experiences in Nigeria, have had a profound impact on her work. [6] She had keenly explored the genres of Western, adventure, and science fiction in the books she had read earlier in her life, yet she realized that these books lacked strong female characters. She considers Ursula K. Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness to have been a major inspiration for the initiation of her writing career, as it was one of the first feminist novels she had encountered. Despite this, she did not intend to write feminist literature. Her work did not take a feminist slant until after the first draft of "Walk to the End of the World", which she had originally intended to be political satire. Synopsis

Hailed by Stephen King as "scary and suspenseful" and "unputdownable," and by Peter Beagle, author of THE LAST UNICORN, as "The best vampire novel I have ever read," THE VAMPIRE TAPESTRY examines the classic monster as a biological, rather than supernatural, predator who awakens from hibernation every few decades needing to relearn human culture. After years of effort, the so-called Edward Lewis Weyland has gained a post as an anthropology professor and director of a sleep research lab. With reliable access to unsuspecting blood donors, he becomes complacent and makes a near-fatal error. First critically wounded by a strong and canny woman, and later imprisoned and humiliated, he begins a journey toward an empathy with his prey that threatens the foundations of his survival.
