About This Item

New York City, NY: Vintage Books, 1994. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. New York City, NY: Vintage Books, 1994. Softcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 532 pages. The author's landmark second collection of essays. One of Camille Paglia's finest achievements. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are many. Published in a small and limited first print run as a "Vintage Books Original" softcover only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Vintage Books: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Text by Camille Paglia. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Camille Paglia's "Vamps & Tramps: New Essays". An impressive, tour-de-force performance: A richer, fuller collection of polemical and provocative essays from one of the most iconoclastic yet thoughtful writers on the contemporary American cultural scene. Reaffirms Camille Paglia's position in American letters as an intelligent and always insightful writer (yes, there are dumb writers, most of them in fact). Paglia's "lone-voice-in-the-wilderness" crusade against the prevailing culture of political correctness in America is laudable even if some of her pugnaciousness may put off many people. Her criticism of mainstream American feminism cannot be ignored for the simple reason that she is mostly right about the pieties and hypocrisies that have become entrenched in a movement that was once as dynamic and influential as the Civil Rights Movement. Her fascinating insight is that although we are superficially a product of Judaeo-Christian civilization, our Graeco-Roman past remains very much alive. This helps explain the relevance and vitality of both popular culture and the cutting-edge, anti-establishment underground. An absolute "must-have" title for Camille Paglia collectors. This title is a great collection. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online (complete number line that includes the Number 1, which other dealers conveniently omit to mention) and despite its imperfection (visible browning on page edges because of the cheap, recycled paper used by the publisher) is still in fine condition overall: Clean, crisp, and bright. We mean that this copy was never handled, read, or used. Please note: Almost ALL copies available online have very serious flaws or are in multiple subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. One of the most important and influential writer/intellectuals of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CAMILLE PAGLIA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0679751203.
