About This Item

Boston & New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1892. Howells originally visited Venice in 1866, then revisited in 1883, but declined revisions to later publication. His Preface notes that "The book is distinctly a youthful book, for good as well as ill. I might amend it; but I am afraid I should mar it if I meddled with it." These are Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copies of the First Edition Thus, a lovely production in a decorative fine binding. White cloth, ruled in gilt, with a gilt wreath and title on the front covers and spine. Clean texts; 297 pages and 287 pages, indexed. Top edges are gilt, others rough-cut. Many beautiful colour illustrations (with guards). These are possible ASSOCIATION COPIES, with an interesting bookplate for Ellen B. Ballou; Ballou wrote a well-regarded history of the publisher Houghton Mifflin. Mild bumps, slight darkeneing of the spine, light soiling to the vulnerable white binding. Really a lovely set of books. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. First Thus.. Decorative Cloth. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.
