About This Item
1856. A view of the waterfront of Garrison, New York with the original dock house at the right and pier in the foreground, and with the "West Point" ferry docked alongside the pier. Across the Hudson River is the Military Academy, with the dome of the Library visible. The Landing was founded in 1821 when Harry Garrison established the first chartered ferry in the state of New York. The ferry boat was initially a horse-propelled scow which was later replaced with three steam engines, the "West Point" (pictured here), "Highlander", and the "Garrison". A notoriously scarce print of the Hudson River and the Military Academy at West Point cited in Harry T. Peters' 'America on Stone' (New York: Arno Press, 1976), the definitive work on American printmakers other than Currier & Ives. In the section pertaining to 'Anonymous' lithographers of American views, Peters writes of this print: "[it] conveys perhaps as well as any of the well known famous views of our Military Academy the real spirit of lithography, and is a delightful print" (p79). Original lithograph with period hand color laid on canvas, with dampstain to the bottom. In the manner of an oil painting it has been laid on canvas, with some darkening possibly of the varnish applied at the time it was laid on canvas. 21 1/2 x 15 1/4" in an ornate gilt and black wood frame, 27 1/2 x 22"
