No dust wrapper called for. A fusion of Williamson's two post-war visits to the Western Front battlefields, the first in 1925 and again in 1927, arranged in a loose diary format and merging his recollections with the contemporary scene.. 1st Edition. Methuen, London, 1917. Book. Good. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing) - a presentation copy inscribed: "From the author, with vivid memories of much hospitality. W.Beach Thomas Oct 16 1919". 8vo. 285pp + xxxi publisher's catalogue. Red cloth lettered and decorated in gold at the spine and in blind at the upper board. Cloth considerably marked and a little worn at corners, yet really quite a crisp and bright copy internally (although the paper used for the publisher's catalogue is of significantly inferior stock to the rest). Beach Thomas' oddly uncommon account of his wartime experiences: he reported for the 'Daily Mail' and at the outset of the war, when Kitchener was opposed to the presence of journalists at the front, was one of several who managed to reach the front lines in Belgium where he was discovered and imprisoned by the British Army, an episode he described as "the longest walking tour of my life, and the… Read More

Description:
Arthur H.Stockwell, London [c.1925]., 1925. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). Slim 8vo. 31pp. Textured purple cloth with gilt lettering and a blind-stamped border to the upper board. The backstrip ends a little rubbed and worn, and the cloth there faded with a little further uneven fading to the margins of the boards. Some light spotting to the endpapers and title leaf, and the binding a little tender at one gathering. Quite a nice, bright copy of a most uncommon book, which comprises fifteen chronologically ordered poems spanning 1914-1919, split into three sections: 'Portents 1914', 'Home' and 'France and Flanders'. Rather than folk rhymes, I believe these to be original poems, but the work is not noted by Reilly and I can find only two references to either the author or the book: a note in a 7 August 1925 issue of 'The Argus', and a passing reference in an article in the December 1928 issue of 'The Musical Times'..

London: Faber and Faber Limited, 1929. Book. See Description. Original Black Cloth. Revised Edition. 7 1/2" x 5". 148 pages. '...easily the best anti-war book written in English... recounts the nine days which he spent on 'The Wet Flanders Plain' when he revisited France as what he calls 'soldat retourne'... Through his ghostly eyes he sees the waste, the wickedness, the folly, in blessed proportion.' From Mr. Humbert Wolfe's review in The Observer, quoted on the dw. Hb in dw, formerly a very good copy which has sadly suffered from storage in a damp place, but is now dry and free from any aroma due to damp. However, the damp has resulted in the rear endpaper becoming completely detached; it is undamaged and could be simply re-glued to the inside of the rear board. The front endpaper is partially detached from the edges, and again could be re-glued. The black cloth binding is fairly uniformly lightened from the damp; very slight fraying at the top of the spine, at… Read More

Description:
London: Faber & Faber Limited, 1929. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5.5". None. A sombre piece written about the author's experiences during the First World War, ten years on after his return to visit the battlefield. This work was written after the author had returned to the Western Front in order to find some closure after the trauma of battle.Henry Williamson (1895-1977) was an English author, best known for his work 'Tarka the Otter'. A great deal of his work concerned wildlife; however, a number of his earlier works deal with his time spent as a rifleman during the First World War. After the war, he believed that it had been futile and caused by greed, and strongly believed that Germany and Britain should never go to war again. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with a small chip to both the head and tail of the spine, which is a little cocked. Internally firmly bound, pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed
