Inscription reads, 'To Mabel Silk/With best Wishes/from/Capt and Mrs J M Simpson/Xmas 1913'. Illustrated with a tissue-guarded portrait frontispiece of Mary Hazledine. The biography of English poet Mary (May) Rebie Hazledine (died age 19 in 1912). Some of her poems are included. She was the daughter of Reverend F J Hazledine, who was vicar of St Luke's Church, Ramsgate, Kent from 1905 to 1912. Rev Hazledine had one of the first motorcars in Ramsgate and would give a lift to anyone - this is acknowledged in the book, the car being refered to as the 'parish car'. He was called the 'fighting parson' because he would go to Central Road, Ramsgate on a Saturday night, intervening in the fights there! Mabel Silk (1890-1985) was housemaid at St Luke's Vicarage from 1905 to 1912 and is refered to in the book, she later became Mrs Woodward. Captain Simpson, who gave this book to Mabel, was a long time worshipper at St Luke's and is also mentioned in the book. Mabel went on to work for Simpson. Included with the book is a two-page handwritten note, by a descendant of Mabel, giving details of Mabel and her time and duties at the Vicarage. ALSO a photograph of Mary Hazledine with her sister, brother and parents. Spotting to edges and occasional spotting throughout; some discolouration to rear cover; else a very good copy of an interesting SCARCE ASSOCIATION COPY of the first edition.. First Edition.
