About This Item

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1936. First Edition / Review Copy. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. Small 8vo, green cloth with silver lettering, Mylar-protected pictorial dust jacket (unclipped) depicting a barn in the mountains, [viii] + 355 pages. Near Fine Review copy of this memorable collection of stories with "Review Copy / Publication Date / February 6, 1936 / Price $2.50" stamp on free front endpaper. The green cloth has faded to gray-green (a common factor with this title), and there are a few minute chips and a bit of rubbing to the dj, else quite an attractive copy. After living outside Paris and in Southern France, Kay Boyle (1902-1992) spent three years (1933-1936) in Austria, where she wrote The White Horses of Vienna. Her most celebrated book studies the rise of Nazism in in that Germanic land. Her sensitive and dynamic story won the O. Henry Award for best short story of the year.
