About This Item
Green cloth with white spine and upper board lettering and illustration, octavo, pp. vii, 310 plus blank leaf. Frontis and 3 other full-page illustrations inserted in the text. Previous owner name on front paste-down near top edge. Two small old sticker removal shadows on free front endpaper. Old tide lines at top third of fore-edge (see photo for our best attempt at a close-up). Old staining from pp. 8-14 (see photo). Shelf rubs spine ends and board tips. Upper board fore-edge extends farther than lower board fore-edge, as in an over-bite. GOOD and sound withal. Contains "The Kidnapping of President Lincoln," a story "universally admired" (see COUSINS, JCH Biography, LSU Press, [1968], p. 176), and 4 other stories, all popular in their day, but demonstrating "Harris's lack of battle experience and . . . superficial understanding of military history . . . " (BICKLEY, JCH, UGA Press, [1987], p. 137). Further references: BAL 7145; DE RENNE III: 972; WRIGHT III: 2490.
