About This Item

New York: Macmillan, ( 1940 ). Facsimile edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo; xvi, 572 pages, green cloth, variant thickness ca. 3mm., inked name on endpaper.

An epic historical novel of the life of Joseph Bailly and his family. " If some of the episodes seem overdramatic, ... The author has, if anything, underdrawn the amazing happenings in the Old Northwest. In addition to being a story of adventure, a record of people and events of the early nineteenth century from Canada to the Gulf, and especially in the Middle Western portion of the Great Lakes region ... and a record of the passing of the Indian life and the french life and of the coming of the Anglo-Saxon frontiersman, the book also becomes a record of the vanishing wilderness of the Calumet marshes and the Indiana and Michigan dune country - Preface." Partially set in Frenchtown, L'Arbre Croche, and Detroit, and on Mackinac Island - MICHIGAN IN THE NOVEL, 16." It was a beautiful world - edged with danger, like a sword shining and sharp. ... Always, as her parents said so often, there seemed to be wolves against the moon! " - p.536.

About Thomas J. Joyce And Company

Owner Thomas Joyce was the regular book appraiser on Home & Garden TV\'s \"The Appraisal Fair\\\" program, on international broadcasts. Thomas Joyce was the co-discoverer of George Washington's personal copy of William Leybourn's 1679 edition of THE COMPLEAT SURVEYOR, from which young Washington learned some of his surveying skills at age 16. The book had vanished for nearly a century until its re-discovery in 2017. It is now back at Mt. Vernon.
