Ibsen's influential arrival in England First English editions printed in Britain, uniformly bound as a set, of Ibsen's drama. "Until the late 1870s, when translations from the original Danish texts first became available, Ibsen's work was virtually unknown outside Scandinavia... His gradual and initially laborious introduction to England formed an inseparable part of the reformation of attitudes to drama and the restyling of the theatrical arts that took place in the late nineteenth century" (Davis, p. 1). 15 vols, octavo (various sizes). With 5 portrait frontispieces. Early 20th-century half red calf by Root & Son, yellow-brown morocco labels, spine compartments tooled in gilt, Spanish moiré marbled patterned sides and endpapers, top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut, red bookmarkers. Bindings rubbed and sometime refurbished, contents occasionally toned, a few volumes foxed. A very good set.
