About This Item

London, James Duncan, [1837]. 8vo. Original publisher's grey boards with printed label to spine; pp. xix, 333, 2 (publisher's advertisements); babel chipped, extremities a little worn, internally, apart from a few and minor spots, very clean and fresh; ownership inscription by C. M. Moorsom, dated 1842 to front fly-leaf. Uncommon first edition. Sometimes attributed to George Mackenzie Beverley, this thorough book consists of a narrative of the outrages inflicted upon the aborigines of Southern Africa, from the settlement of the Dutch down to the sixth war between the Xhosa Kingdom and European settlers, which saw the British involved at a large scale. The author's Anti-Imperialist stance is made perfectly clear with the opening sentence of the preface. 'That narrative, which displays a colony of the British nation systematically oppressing the aboriginal inhabitants by harsh and unrelenting injustice, and enlarging its boundaries by acts of violent spoliation, ought to be fortified with more than ordinary proofs, for without such proofs it would be difficult to believe the astonishing accusations of our colonial history' (p. v). Mendelssohn I, p. 371.
