About This Item

This is a bound volume of "THE YALE COURANT" - a student publication of Yale University. The volume contains nine bound monthly issues ranging in date from April, 1914 to February, 1915. All issues come with their front and back covers. The volume is loaded with photographs, drawings, and illustrated advertisements. This particular volume has a heavy emphasis on sports. Included in the June 1914 issue (the "Baseball Number") are lines from the famous baseball poem, "CASEY AT THE BAT" by Ernest Thayer, as well as lines from the "reply" poem, "Casey's Redemption" (or, "Casey's Revenge") by James Grantland Rice ("James Wilson"). (Note - neither poem is complete in its entirety.) The following nine issues are included: April 1914 ("Modern Methods in Athletics"); May 1914; June 1914 ("Baseball Number"); July 1914; October 1914 ("War Incidents"); November 1914 ("Football Number"); December 1914; January 1915; February 1915 ("Military Training"). A wonderful peek into campus happenings at Yale College in the early 1900's.

Condition:
There are a few small stains on the front cover; clean back cover and spine. The spine has library ID label affixed at the bottom edge. Sharp cover corners. Bright gilt lettering on the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. All issues are securely in place. The places are mostly clean and white with an occasional smudge here and there. There is a "Western Reserve Historical Society" label affixed to the front pastedown. The bottom of the advertisement on page i of the June 1914 issue has a rectangular section that has been clipped off at the bottom; the last 2 pages have a 1" vertical tear at the bottom edge. Page 203 of the April 1914 issue has a couple small tears at the outer edge. Page 171 of January 1915 has a 1" tear at the outer edge. Overall the volume is in Very Good- condition.
