Reprint of a new edition, xvii, [3], 272; contemporary half dark brown calf over marbled boards, two green morocco spine labels, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers; edges and boards a bit scuffed, else about fine. Contemporary bookseller ticket on rear pastedown. The author's first novel, a charged, albeit rather disorganized, attack on Roman Catholicism and the Oxford Movement, originally serialized in "Fraser's Magazine" in 1848 and first published in book form in 1851. (See DNB XI, p. 176-177).
