About This Item

London: Collins, 1963. First edition, first printing. Published by Collins in London, 1963. This is a very good copy. Issued without a dust wrapper, the green-pictorial paperbound boards are with general wear throughout. The spine tips and worn and the spine is with some light separation at the bottom edge. There is slight spotting and handling marks to the rear panel. The text blocks are mostly clean, but with some foxing to the top and side edges. This copy is free from previous owners ink and is in very good condition overall. Containing three short stories, it is mostly known for its first story, "Yertle the Turtle", in which the eponymous Yertle, king of the pond, stands on his subjects in an attempt to reach higher than the Moon—until the bottom turtle burps and he falls into the mud, ending his rule. Though the book included "burp", a word then considered to be relatively rude, it was a success upon publication, and has since sold more than a million copies. In 2001, it was listed at 125 on the Publishers Weekly list of the best-selling children's books of all time.

Reviews

On Apr 19 2023, a reader said:
Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories is a delightful old favorite about an ambitious, self centered, fascistic turtle which was first published on my brother's 3rd birthday in the year that I became 2 years old. This imaginative illustrated collection of 3 stories starts with the famous story of Yertle the Turtle, who was 'king of all he could see', and logically concluded that, if he could see more, he could rule more. Illustrated by by Theodor Geisel, or 'Dr Seuss' in his black outline cartoon style, with selective highlights of color which imbues believable human emotion in his cast of characters. Children love the rhythmic rhymes read allowed to them with expressive vocal tones. With repeated readings, some kids memorize and recite portions of the story long before they can read it themselves. Acording th this websites synopsis of Yertle the Turtle and other stories, Seuss used "a type of meter called anapestic tetrameter." All I know is his use of it is well loved and wonderful to children of all ages!
