About This Item

Dorothy Parker (1893-1967) was a Twentieth Century American poet, writer, critic and satirist best known for her wisecracks, wit and keen eye for urban foibles of her time. She was published frequently in the New Yorker magazine and other popular publications of the time. She was a founding member of the Algonquin Literary Circle in New York City, and later moved to Hollywood where she worked as a screenwriter. Her work earned two Academy Award nominations. Her numerous publications includes short stories: Lament for the Living, After Such Pleasures, Here Lies: The Collected Stories of Dorothy Parker, Collected Stories, The Portable Dorothy Parker; poems: Enough Rope, Sunset Gun, Death and Taxes, Collected Poems: Not So Deep As a Well, Collected Poems, and Not Much Fun: The Collected Poems of Dorothy Parker as well as essays, plays and screenplays. "Once upon a time--just after World War One, to be precise--the world was bright and new, and Dorothy Parker was one of the brightest and newest people in it." John Keats. The author of this biography did not know Dorothy Parker personally and the book was not authorized by her. He has drawn extensively on the public doman and many persons who did know Dorothy Parker persoanlly to create a portrait of a paradoxical and fascinating person.
