Michael Joseph, London, 1950. First English Edition. Hardcover. Good/Poor. Bright pink endpapers with white design. Gray coloured boards with gilt titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing a montage of images following the early 20th century against a bright pink background. White titles to the front panel and backstrip. The last collaboration of the authors before the death of S. J. Simon. The basic plot is "... old General Marrible [ of Mafeking ] and his four inconsequently conceived children." -- from the front fold over panel, stories. As the warning says on the page before the text starts " The customer is warned! This is less a novel than an out-of-date newsreel." Bumping and discolouration to the head and to the heel of the backstrip and slight bumping the top book corners. There are two creases that run the full length of the backstrip. The spine is cocked. Foxing to the top book edges and scattered to the top edges of both the front and back book panels. Browning to the text block edges. Light browning to the internal pages. Original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front paste-down. Rubbing and chipping to the dustwrapper corners, with loss. The top left-hand corner of the backstrip has a small piece missing and the lower left-hand corner of the rear backstrip has also are small piece missing. Three tears to the top edge of the front dustwrapper panel, measuring between 0.25 " -- to 0.5 ". One tear, top right-hand corner of the front dustwrapper panel, has been inexpertly been repaired with tape on the front side of the dustwrapper, tape still in situ. Creasing and fading to the backstrip region and general rubbing of the dustwrapper panels is also present. The front fold over panel has split for the first 3.75 ".
