On August 5, 1949, a crew of fifteen Smoke-jumpers of the U.S. Forest Service's elite airborne firefighters stepped out of their palne above a remote forest fire in the Montana wilderness. Less than tow hours later, all of them were either dead or fatally burned. Author Norman Maclean actually saw the fire in 1949 as it burned and spent the next 14 years studying abd reliving it; the result was this book, a story of Montana, the ways of firefighters, fire scientists, and especially the crew dropped to fight it. Maclean was also the author of the story "A River Runs Through It

Synopsis

Young Men and Fire is a non-fiction book written by Norman Maclean and edited by his son, John Norman Maclean. It is an account of Norman Maclean's research of the Mann Gulch fire of 1949 and the 13 men who died there. The fire occurred in Mann Gulch in the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness on August 5.
