Saint Laurent was an admirer of the Ballets russes (founded by Sergei Diaghilev in the early twentieth century), Léon Bakst's costumes, and Orientalist paintings. His 1976 collection simultaneously evoked czar-era Russia and the Russia depicted in operas. Using gleaming colors and luxurious textiles (including fur, chiffon, silk, velvet, and gold lamé), Saint Laurent restored haute couture's capacity to make people dream.
