Coming of age story for juveniles of the young Ceylonese Zeely whose heroine is an ancient Watusi queen. Inscribed by Hamilton on the free front endpaper. First novel of author Virginia Esther Hamilton (1936 - 2002) , who wrote 41 books, including M. C. Higgins, the Great (1974), for which she won the U.S. National Book Award in category Children's Books and the Newbery Medal in 1975. Hamilton's lifetime achievements include the international Hans Christian Andersen Award (1992) for writing children's literature and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award (1995) for her contributions to American children's literature in 1995. Illustrated by Symeon Shimin. . A better than very good copy. Some light foxing to unclipped dustjacket flaps, which have some edgewear and shallow chipping and a closed tear rear panel. Books shows little sign of use. A solid collectible, scarcely found with author's signature. .
