About This Item
Paris: Devambez, Imp. Original poster mounted on linen. Color lithograph. Measures 31" x 23 1/2"

This celebratory WWI-era poster features beautiful artwork by Andre Gallad of the Statue of Strasbourg in the Place de Concorde in Paris.
In the Place de la Concorde in Paris, eight statues represent the French cities of Bordeaux, Brest, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Rouen and Strasbourg. The region of Alsace and its capital, Strasbourg, was lost to the Germans in the Franco-Prussia War in 1871, and recovered by the French at the end of World War I. During German control of Alsace, the statue of Strasbourg was often covered in black mourning crape. On Armistice Day, as depicted in this poster, the French honored the statue by draping it in the French flag, and decorating with wreaths and garlands. The inscription translates to "The Statue of Strasbourg, erected like the other cities of France on the Place de la Concorde in Paris, was piously decorated with tricolor flags by the people of Paris... On the evening of the armistice, she shines in the light of the party victory!"

Andre Galland (1886-1965) was a prominent French artist, whose work comprised of book illustrations, comics, court sketches, and poster design. This is an excellent example of work, and one of his earliest poster designs. This poster is in excellent condition, folded as issued. Hard to find.
