About This Item

Scarce catalog for an exhibition of the work of Bohdan Lacina (1912-1971), the Czech surrealist painter, illustrator, and graphic designer associated with the post-war Ra Group (Skupina Ra). The group's roots go back to the 1930s, but given the Nazi occupants' view of surrealism as a "degenerate art" its members were unable to publish during World War II. The post-war period saw a burst of activity, leading to the official creation of the group, which also included Josef Istler, Miloš Kořeček, Bohdan Lacina, Vilém Reichmann, Václav Tikal, and Václav Zykmund. During Husák's Normalization regime of the 1970s many of them would once again run afoul of official state aesthetics. This exhibition, held in the West Bohemian town of Františkové Lázně, focused on Lacina's work as an illustrator; aside from a longer essay, it contains a list of exhibitions and a bibliography of artists books or books illustrated by Lacina. Not in KVK, OCLC.
